I found myself in the same situation as my good friend and neighbor Bob. We both were looking for a 4x4 tractor/loader and had similar price limitations. After much research, it looked like we both found the Kubota B2100 as THE tractor. So, off each of went to do our research and shop. I found an equipped B2100 to be more expensive than I could afford and had to settle for looking at the B1700. My next stop was the JD Dealer where I looked at a 4100. While it seems the 4100 and B2100 would be good matches against each other, the prices put the 4100 and the B1700 neck and neck. I went with the 4100.Bob, on the other hand went to the Kubota dealer to demo the B2100. Same deal with price, so he went with the B1700.Weeks later, we have put both machines through hell and compared and swapped and played. After much work and time we both concluded they are both good machines. If we had to pick one over the other, we both would pick the 4100. The main difference seemed to be if one of us could afford it and wanted to add a backhoe. Kubota sells one while JD does not and does not recommend one (for the 4100 anyway). While both tractors will get the job done and we gave a slight edge to the 4100, we both concluded that the "right" dealer would make all the difference. If anyone is in the market for either, we would be happy to pass along my experiences.

I'm sorry, but your not comparing apples to apples. The 4100 according to JD specs has 20 gross HP,16 HP with hydro. The B1700 is rated by Kubota specs at 17 gross HP,13 HP with hydro. The B2100 is rated 21 gross HP and 16 HP with hydro. So,it's looks to me like you need to be comparing the 4100-B2100.I know that price is a factor, but like you said, you can't put a hoe on a 4100,but you can mount one on any B-Series KUBOTA.Plus Kubota compacts are worth more when it's time to sell or trade, and thats a fact. ....

Your right. The B2100 is better compared to the 20hp JD 4100.The B1700 is a few hp down to make it a fair comparison. I actually went out thinking B2100 vs. JD 4100.However, price quickly became an issue and put the JD 4100 and the B1700 together.(As did the B2100 and the JD4200).In either case, Not really apples to apples with hp etc., but strickly looking at price, this mismatch became my options. If price did not factor is it would be a completely different scene. Also, as you mentioned, for backhoe work, any Kubota B is a better choice over the JD4100. ....
